Sankalpa – The Power of the Will
Sankalpa – The Power of the Will
Sankalpa means will and motivation. We are the result of our Sankalpas, creating ourselves and our karmas through our intentions at the heart level.
Yoga cultivates the will or Sankalpa for Self-Realization. Ayurveda cultivates the will or Sankalpa for healing. Sankalpa is like a plan or strategy. “I intend to do the following action in the following manner for a specific period of time in order to produce the following results”. We do something in certain way to arrive at a certain goal. Sankalpa implies not only developing our own will, but also allying it with the forces that can help it achieve its aim. Sankalpas are generally projected as various affirmations and vows.
Spiritual Sankalpas help liberate the soul, ego – based ones reflect selfish desires. And much like the old proverb “As a man wishes in his heart, so is he”, the result that we gain tells us the nature of our action.
All healing practices should begin with the proper intention in both the patient and the therapist. The appropriate Sankalpa sets the stage for healing processes and creates clarity about the results that are being sought.
Sankalpa for the Patient:
I seek to heal myself through natural and spiritual methods in order to create optimal health and vitality to fulfill my destiny for the good of all!
Sankalpa for the Therapist:
I seek to aid in the healing of this patient through natural and spiritual methods in order to alleviate their suffering and help awaken human beings to their true purpose in life. May all the forces of healing in the universe support me in this endeavor!
